People of the BPA - Dan Slate from H&S Companies
January 4, 2017
The craft beer and spirits industry is really all about the people and we want to celebrate that at the Brewers Professional Alliance. To do so, we've created our "People of the BPA" series. In this edition, we learn about Dan Slate - the person whose vision created the BPA.
The brains behind the creation of the Brewers Professional Alliance, Dan is a Ferris State Bulldog through and through. In 1980, he graduated near the top of his class from the Big Rapids, MI based institution. Outside of Bulldog athletics, most of the activities he enjoys end up with a craft beer - running, biking, climbing a 14er and skiing.
A co-founder of H&S Companies, a CPA and business-consulting firm with 10 locations throughout Michigan, Dan has been a CPA for 36 years. He's been on bank boards for nearly as long. In fact, the only commitment he's held longer is that of marriage to his wife Lori for nearly 40 years.
On the family side, Dan has three kids, two of which are working together to open a craft brew pub in the mountains of Colorado (Buena Vista). It's a good thing they'll have variety in the pub because
when pressed for his favorite beer, Dan says, "That all depends on the time of year and what is on tap!"
The BPA has been very fun for Dan as helping people grow their business' profitably is what drives him each day ... especially if they are passionate about what they do, like most craft brewery owners. That said, it drives him crazy when people are afraid to do something because they have never done it before. As we've heard him say before, "There is nothing wrong with failure as long as you learn from your mistakes. In fact, seems like the recipe for success."
It's a phrase derived from his favorite quote... "Every situation properly perceived presents an opportunity"
