Streamline Beer Production With ERP
September 10, 2012
Brewers love beer, but they don’t love paperwork. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are a systematic tool used by many companies in the manufacturing sector to control all facets of their business. They are tried and true software systems, and they are now available to microbreweries at a reasonable cost.
ERP systems will track the entire business from purchasing grains and hops to production of wort, green beer, brite beer, dry hopping, and bottling; through shipping and invoicing the customers. These systems even include full accounting modules that track accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory management, and banking.
“Having a way to keep track of inventory, needed supplies, upcoming deliveries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and so on is so important for those running a brewery,” said Scott Hunt, Brewers Professional Alliance Restaurant Operations Specialist.
ERP systems are built with modules that link to each other seamlessly. The modules include: accounting, manufacturing, supply chain management, customer relationship management, and quality control. Access can be limited to users based upon their personal needs. When used correctly, this creates a process of internal controls not seen with the use of spreadsheets and other processes.
In addition, ERP systems are real-time, which means when a tank is emptied into the next process, the production order is closed, and all individuals needing that information will see it immediately. The need for phone calls and emails to determine when product will be ready is practically eliminated. This real-time information improves organizational efficiency and enables better decision making.
The best news is that these systems are no longer cost prohibitive. The Brewers Professional Alliance has partnered with two industry leaders in the creation of software available specifically to the craft brewing industry. Using internet-based technology, these companies have significantly reduced the start-up costs of implementation.
